We have been informed that a small number of troops received 2024 Adventurefuls™ cookies packaged in 2023 boxes. These boxes erroneously state that Adventurefuls contain dairy (whey). All Adventurefuls produced for the 2024 Girl Scout Cookie Program are dairy-free / vegan.
ABC Bakers explains the situation in the statement below. You may share this statement with any concerned cookie customers, as well as the ABC Bakers' Cookie FAQs for more information.
"ABC Bakers would like to take a moment from this very busy
time of the season and thank you for all that you do to support the
girls of Western Ohio through the Girl Scout Cookie program. We want
to address the concerns that are being expressed regarding the removal
of whey in Adventurefuls and amended allergen statements.
Prior to this season, Hearthside Foods’ regulatory team conducted a
thorough review of all active items and recommended the removal of any
non-functional allergens. As a result, the whey used in Adventurefuls
was identified as such and we were asked to remove it as an ingredient
starting with the 2023-24 season. Manufacturing protocols require us
to do a full allergen clean resulting in lost production time.
Please be assured that there is no risk that someone who is
sensitive to milk or that is vegan has been exposed to whey in this
season’s production. There is NO whey in the Adventurefuls we have
produced this season. FDA regulations do allow for a reasonable amount
of over declared packaging to be consumed in this type of packaging
transition. In our case, it was approximately 5% of the Adventurefuls
cartons.
Although there is no health risk, we understand
that the denotation of “made with vegan ingredients” with the mixed
packaging in market at the same time (with and without whey) is
confusing and was ultimately avoidable. In retrospect, ABC should have
written off and recycled the remaining cartons or delayed any updates
to denote Adventurefuls as “made with vegan ingredients.”
We offer our most sincere apology for the added stress this
confusion has caused."
